Our Fav Jap Haunt, En Dining.
the reasons why we keep on going back to En restaurant? great service, great (and pretty!) food, good variety of sakes, nice ambience and best of all, Pixie gets to come along whenever we go there. there is always something new and interesting surprises to be discovered in their menu. despite the dainty portions and not so dainty prices, En has never disappointed. we had always enjoyed the pleasant dining cum sake sessions there. thats why, draco and i were there again on wed night, doing wot we do best- eating and drinking.
we had the spicy kimchi porkskin/cucumbers and all-time fav seared tuna tataki for starters-
then we had tempura oysters wrapped in shiso leaves which were rather unremarkable, unagi (eel) maki and goya Ohitashi (marinated raw bittergourd in vinegar soya sauce) once again.

Sunday's Dinner 081006
YAY YIPPIE JIAN Cooked for us all on Sunday ... it was lovely.
We had a salad, mushroom stew, rosti, and sausages!
Yum it was the best because most of us we were even too lazy to step outta the house... I keep blaming the haze but it's not ... it's my pure laziness of wanting to nua in bed all day.
Jian will probably write up the recipe later for the mushroom stew! It can double up as nice mushroom soup also. :-)

New Takashimaya Pasta Place (Pasta Cafe)
I know i have been very lazy in uploading any food photos taken from my phone. Anyway here are the pics from the new pasta place at Ngee Ann City aka Takashimaya. We never took pictures of the establishment itself but it was all glass and white lights with diner style decor. It gave patrons a good impression. Anyways i'm really too lazy to write much since this is way overdue. The food looked good but the taste did not come together. Everything was just "under-tasting".
Prawn Salad
Fries with Dips (miso, salsa, marinara, mayo, ketchup)
Calamari with House Special Dip and Mayo
Dory with Potato Baked Rice
Seafood Baked Rice
Sefood Tom Yam SpaghettiSeafood Pescatore
Laksa Spaghetti
I totally agree ... all the dishes were lacking in taste. Although the food styling was nice, it's a pitty. Pasta Cafe is located at Ngee Ann City, B2-37 very close to the Pepper Lunch outlet there. It's owned by Pokka Food http://www.pokkafood.com.sg/index.php

Nanbantei At Far East Plaza
last night was another binge night for eve and i. we dined at nanbantei japanese rstaurant at FEP. specialising in yakitori (japanese charcoal grill), this cosy little eatery provided a fun and novel dining experience for me. and you get to sit at the bar and watch the chef in action. we ordered a huge spread for juz the two of us - assorted sashimi platter, garlic rice, cucumber/wakame seaweed in vinegar sauce, grilled teriyaki codfish, cold tofu salad and various grilled yakitori sticks. we had -
- asparagus maki (asparagus wrapped with pork)
- tsukune (minced chicken balls)
- okura maki (ladyfingers wrapped with pork)
- gyu yaki (beef steak)
- mini tomato maki (mini tomatoes wrapped with bacon)
- shishito (grilled eggplant wrapped in shiso leaves)
- nikuzume shiitake (stuffed shiitake mushrooms)
- nasu ohba maki (i forgot wot this is, too many items!)
- yasai sticks (grilled japanese green peppers)
we took only a few shots, as there were simply too many items to take.
assorted sashimi platter
mini tomatoes wrapped with bacon
grilled eggplants wrapped with shiso leaves
and i finally got to try nigori sake for the first time. it's a coarse-filtered sake which looks cloudy and is unlike any other sakes i've had. creamy and sweet, i must say it took a bit of getting used to, but turned out yummy and lush once i got the hang of it.
Tueday's Dinner Party
so i cooked dinner on tuesday for vic's very belated birthday. it was a five people sit-down affair with of cos, lots of wine and drinks. as everyone expected, dinner was delayed. it was served at 9pm instead of the appointed time, which was supposed to be 8pm. as always, i'm meticulous and fastidious when it comes to the chopping, dicing and the food styling even in my haste. the menu of the day was:
- crab and grapefruit appetiser
- mixed salad with balsamic dressing
- crostini/bread with thai lemongrass pate
main course -
- panfried salmon with green apple salsa, portobello mushroom balsamico, asparagus and wasabi mash
needless to say, we all ended up satiated to the point of food coma. and we washed it all down with lots of booze, yippee!
carbonara n roasted veg
Mmmm yummy Jian and Satellite made some roasted veg and cabonara the other night ... somewhere last week I think! But there was a twist to it ... so I guess someone else can write up the recipe for the Carbonara.
Here's some beautiful pics for ya.
Here's Lynx beautiful platter of food that she made somewhere last week as well! Yes it was another party we had.
Jian's Spaghetti Carbonara Recipe
Carbonara for 5:- Boiled Spaghetti (I used macaroni cuz we didn't have spaghetti)
- Chopped Garlic
- 4 Whole Eggs Beaten
- 15 rashers of Bacon (I used a mixture of Proscuitto and smokey bacon)
- Half Glass White Wine
- 3 Tablespoons of Cream (Traditional carbonara does not use cream though)
- 3 Tablespoons of Olive Oil
- Grated Parmesan
- Freshly Ground Black Pepper
- Salt
- Chopped Parsley (Optional)
In a pot, heat olive oil and fry garlic and bacon together until garlic browns and bacon fat has been released. Deglaze the pot with white wine to liberate the flavours stuck at the bottom of the pot. Add cream, black pepper and some pasta water until sauce is reduced.
Add chopped parsley (for colour), grated parmasan and pasta into pot. Toss until pasta is hot, add beaten eggs and turn off heat immediately. Mix well, the beaten egg will cook in the remaining heat. Add salt to taste.
Plate and serve warm topped with more parmesan.
